Switching between computers with an Apple trackpad

Posted:

I run both my work Macbook Pro and my personal Mac mini off the same rig with everything routed from one Thunderbolt cable. It's pretty cool to switch a single cable and have monitors, keyboard (have to go wired here), audio and various other peripherals work for each machine.

Wireless devices is a little different. My Logitech Lift mouse has a switch on the bottom allow you to pair to three different bluetooth devices and change between them.

But my Apple trackpad (I still have the old AA batteries version) doesn't have a switch. When you turn if off and back on, it remembers which device you were connected to and reconnects. In my situation my work and personal devices stay on all the time so it's always going to connect to that last one it was connected to.

I found this trick that allows you to switch the device it connects to even if the other one is on.

  • Turn off the trackpad by holding the power button.
  • Turn it back on - but do so by holding the power button until the light begins flashing.
  • While hold it, select the trackpad from bluetooth on macOS.
  • Once it connects you can let go of the power button.

Works like a charm every time.
